Another MXGP moto win for Gautier Paulin

Gautier Paulin of the Monster Kawasaki Racing Team raced to his third MXGP moto win of the season in the fifth round of the FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship at Sevlievo in Bulgaria.

The stylish Frenchman was again in immaculate form as he raced to an emphatic victory in the opening moto of the Bulgarian GP after a dramatic pass on the current world champion on the opening lap of the race. He eventually won by eight seconds and also set the fastest lap of the race. His hopes of making further advances in the championship standings were stunted when rain interfered with the second moto and made overtaking extremely difficult on an already slick track. After gating fourth, it soon became obvious that the risks of attempting to move up the leaderboard were too high and, with the larger picture of the series as a whole in view, Paulin maintained his position to the chequered flag to secure second place overall on the day and advance one position in the standings to fourth, just 14 points from second place.

KRT teammate Steven Frossard made a brace return to racing just one week after being struck on the head by a rival in Italy, but again had little luck. After a brace ninth position in qualifying his opening GP race was interrupted already on the opening lap when another rider dislodged a hay bale into his path, but he bravely charged back through the pack to finish ninth. Having lost a complete lap in a similar incident with a hay bale on the opening lap of race two he wisely withdrew from racing halfway through the race when it became evident that he had no chances of scoring points. Steven was fourteenth overall in the GP and is now thirteenth in the series.

Gautier Paulin: « We had a real motocross track this weekend, and it was great to ride on Saturday with such grip; I really enjoyed going in the corners full gas. Today the conditions were different but the organisers did a good job to prepare the track. I was second at the start of the first race but I passed Cairoli straight away in a corner and controlled my rivals to post the fastest lap and win this race. The second moto was different with the rain; my start was not so bad, but not as good as the first one; I was running in fourth position and it was important to get a podium result again. Now I will fly to Belgium to train in the sand before the GP of Valkenswaard.”

Steven Frossard: “I was happy with my qualifying race; I didn’t take any risks and secured a ninth position. My first start was good, but on the first lap another rider hit a hay bale and it rolled into the path of my front wheel. I crashed and another rider hit me, so I was last when I restarted the bike. I came back through to ninth, and for sure a seventh position would have been possible but I hit a neutral during the race and lost time. My second start was not as good, and in a corner a rider pushed me outside and I got another hay bale under my bike; it took me one complete lap to take it away. I continued for fifteen minutes but felt tired and pulled out as I was not in the points. Now I will move to the team workshop in Holland to prepare the next round of the series.”
