Romain Febvre, a long-term Monster Energy athlete, joins the Kawasaki Racing Team in 2020 as the Frenchman completes a high-profile twin-spearhead assault on the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship.
A regional champion during his youth career in his native Vosges Romain was a front-runner at national level without adding any titles before wandering into the supermoto scene in both France and across the frontier in Germany. He was an immediate success in the world of drift but his heart remained embedded in motocross and he realised during his late teens that he could not delay a return to the dirt any longer if he was to achieve his career aims. The experience of racing for victory in supermoto and his growing maturity stood him in good stead and, helped on his way by local supporters, he quickly rose through the ranks in French adult motocross before sensationally clinching the FIM European EMX250 title in a nail-biting finale at the age of nineteen. After a solid rookie GP year in MX2 he attracted factory support in 2013 and by the end of the following summer was a winner at world level on his way to the series bronze medal, scoring his maiden GP victory in Brazil at the age of twenty-two. He would have been the natural successor to the MX2 world crown, but, born on the thirty-first of December, his career in the 250cc class was over as he missed the age cut-off by a single day. Undaunted by the challenge his talent attracted renewed factory support in the premier MXGP class and, after a solid start with a string of top six finishes, he rose to the occasion at the eighth round of the series in his native France, held significantly at the glorious Villars-sous-Ecot track just one-hundred-and-thirty kilometres from his native Epinal, to take command of the series. He eventually recorded eight GP victories on his way to the 2015 MXGP world title, his dominance so emphatic that the rookie clinched the title three rounds from the end of the series. He rounded out his first season in the 450cc class by taking a stunning double-win at the Motocross of Nations to lead France to victory in front of a massive crowd on home ground at Ernée on his debut at the world annual world team contest and seemed destined to add more titles but fate and the ever-present risk of injury in the most strenuous sport in the world prevented him from completing a full season during each of the years which have followed though he has added a further four GP victories to his account and led France to a hat-trick of victories on each of his appearances in the Motocross of Nations in 2016 and 2017. A Monster Energy athlete throughout his MXGP career Romain was again a front-runner in 2019 and showed his spirit and conviction as he returned mid-season from an early season setback to storm to an overwhelming double-victory in the mid-summer Czech GP before a heavy fall as he was forced off-line by a backmarker whilst leading the Swedish GP less than a month later left him with a broken femur. Immediate surgery followed by a successful rehabilitation process has seen the twenty-nine-year old back in training by December and he has spent the winter absolving a thorough test programme with the Kawasaki Racing Team which sees him fully-prepared for the challenge as he enthusiastically approaches his maiden campaign in Green fully confident of returning to his rightful place at the very top of the world rankings.
